Course:

Crafting as Culture

Experience how a community of people can live with the Land.

Course Overview.

Join us for an immersive course that explores the timeless connection between foraging, craft, and community. From gathering natural materials to creating hand-crafted items, this experience offers the chance to rediscover how these practices have always been a shared effort deeply embedded in human culture. We will come together as a community to forage, process, and create, working collaboratively to transform raw materials from the land into meaningful, functional objects.

Throughout the course, you will experience the richness of communal living and making as we all take part in each step of the process—from gathering plants, fibres, and other resources to crafting and sharing skills. This hands-on experience fosters a deep sense of belonging and highlights how working together strengthens our bonds with one another and the land that sustains us.

As we engage in these traditional practices, you will also gain insight into how cultures have always been shaped by their relationship to the land and, in turn, how those cultural practices shape the environment. Through this interplay, you will understand the reciprocal connection between humans and nature and how we can actively contribute to creating regenerative, sustainable communities.

By the end of the course, you will leave with crafted items that carry the essence of your shared experiences and memories of the communal effort and the sense of being part of a larger, regenerative culture. This course offers more than just practical skills—it offers the opportunity to be part of a transformative process that fosters a deeper relationship with the Land while also contributing to a new, regenerative culture rooted in community and sustainability.

We will cover;

  • Foraging Walks: Participate in group foraging to gather natural materials such as reed, clay, tree bark, and plant fibres, learning how to harvest the land sustainably.

  • Natural Fiber Weaving: Work together to weave baskets or mats using foraged reeds and grasses, rediscovering the communal nature of craft and the shared effort of creating useful objects.

  • Clay Pottery: Gather local clay and collaboratively shape bowls, pots, or sculptures using traditional techniques that reflect the deep connection between human creativity and the earth.

  • Tree Bark Crafting: Learn how to responsibly collect tree bark and use it to craft items such as containers, cordage, or simple tools while understanding the significance of this material in various cultures.

  • Tool-Making: Create simple tools from natural materials, such as knives or digging sticks, and learn how past communities worked together to fashion essential implements for daily life.

  • Natural Dyeing: Experiment with natural dyes derived from foraged plants to colour fibres and textiles, collaborating with others to transform raw materials into vibrant, hand-dyed items.

  • Crafting Regenerative Culture: Participate in discussions on how foraging, crafting, and communal living can be part of a modern, regenerative culture that honours both the community and the sustainability of the Land.

You will learn how to:

Develop a practice of nurturing communities through a variety of crafts.

Understand how communities can weave themselves with the Land through its materials.

Create a deep understanding of how natural crafts create a sense of place.
